Dear Author:
I appreciate that you put in a lot of work in your project. Big Bangs are terrifying and amazing all at the same time.
I was stoked: you had put characters from a show set in this decade, and placed them in Middle Earth. COOL! Hobbits, Elves, Wizards, oh my!
But...I have to say I was less than pleased by the end result.
You lost me when Men of Gondor said Yeah. Then the Elves were saying Yeah. Soon, EVERYONE was saying "Yeah." Then curse words like "sod off" started appearing. Which would have been straight up hilarious if this had been written as a comedy. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
Also, the point of an AU is to shift the reader perception, right? Make us see the characters in a different light. They're still recognizable, but with a twist. Problem was, there wasn't much point to transporting the characters into this alternate world: (most of) the main characters were the same as in their tv show (even down to the scientific jargon. Elves nattering on about blood spatter and carotid arteries really pulled me out of the AU experience). The only thing that reminded me that they were in Middle Earth was that they rode horseback everywhere, there was a lot of Elvish thrown around, and location names. That and the fact people wore armor and tights and cloaks and stuff.
I think even worse than the yeahs was how the fic used the female characters so ill. One character - shown as quiet, a little timid, very shy and kind of socially inept - suddenly became a raving bitch whose sole purpose in life was to marry the main character. Another female character - known in canon to be brilliantly smart - was turned to the dark side because the big baddie paid her a bit of attention. Another female character - caustic, sarcastic, yet snarkily funny - became a racist. Wait, what? Why the hate on for the women?
Not to say that the entire thing was bad. There were huge chunks of the fic where I was transported. The way you wrote the baddie was awesome. Except, well, it was hard to ignore the glaring faults.
Too long, didn't read: I was reading a fic and at first I was YEAH! Then I was "Aw, Hell to the Naw."
