UPDATE: Steve Perry, writer of Thundercats, Silverhawk, Timespirits, etc, missing; possible homicide. Please click here: http://lorelei76.dreamwidth.org/1017.html for more information.
I remember running into the house on weekday afternoons after school to catch the reruns; then waking up at 8 am in preparation for a saturday morning cartoon marathon, capped with new episodes of Thundercats and Silverhawk.
If any of you EVER watched and loved Thundercats or Silverhawks when you were a kid, I'm asking for your help - if you can spread the word, great. If you can spare a bit of cash, even better. I am definitely not the type to take up a cause of any sort - but this really hit me hard and I couldn't just sit back and throw in my donation and forget about it.
Read this:
http://tinyurl.com/ybzxbx2 and
http://srbissette.com/?p=8259. The second link made me a little weepy because, god, that is the saddest situation to be in. You'd think as one of the writers for a successful saturday morning cartoon and comic would have money to spare, but he was a freelance writer - he never owned any of this work. And once production wrapped up on Thundercats and Silverhawks, that was pretty much it.
Anything helps. I paypal-ed him a bit of cash (seriously, it wasn't much. I was embarassed how little it was) and he replied back with such generosity. Yes, I've done my due diligence: this is really Steve Perry, he really is in dire straits, he really was a writer for one of my favorite cartoons when growing up.
I'm not big on the whole "please donate" thing. But for some reason, this guy struck a chord in me, maybe because I have such happy memories of saturday mornings running downstairs to catch the newest episode of Thundercats. Thundercats and Silverhawks and all those other cartoons were our babysitters afterschool and during weekends. They fueled my imagination for years - I remember writing stories about my adventures with Lion-O and all in a journal. I would imagine more adventures with those cartoon characters during long roadtrips with the family. I honed my drawing skills trying to copy from my Thundercats coloring books.
There are several options to donate (yes, I've done my due diligence and have exchanged several emails with Steve):
1) Paypal directly to his account:
sandramaples48@yahoo.com. ANYTHING will help - I'm not kidding about how embarassingly, pathetically small my donation was, but he left me to tears after I read his email response. Undoubtedly it's a form email, but emails from him afterwards assured me that my donation was going directly to him and his son. If you don't have a paypal account, it's ridiculously easy to set up an account as long as you've got a credit card or checking account or something.
2) Money order to the following address:
Steve Perry
38046 8th Ave
Zephyrhills, FL 33542
3) Donate to The Hero Initiative (
http://www.heroinitiative.org/). Per their website: The Hero Initiative creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. Make a note that you'd like to help out Steve Perry in particular so they can funnel a little extra to him.
